Review: Firing Line Range Huntington Beach, CA

There are now only two locations Huntington Beach and Burbank and this review is only for the Huntington Beach location. I have been to this range many times over the last decade and I have seen it before and after the lobby was remodeled. While I do feel some parts of the range still need upgrades it’s overall a great range to go to. Located at 17921 Jamestown lane, Huntington Beach, CA, it’s tucked away a few blocks away from Beach Blvd and Talbert, I have included a map below.

The rates are comparable to other local ranges, but the selection of rental pistols is slightly smaller than the other ranges. The staff is awesome and I haven’t met a staff member that wasn’t engaging and a pleasure to interact with. The Lobby after the remodel looks really good with a good selection of targets and they have ammo in multiple calibers available. They have plenty of lanes and even at the busier times I haven’t had much of a wait. The firearms available for rent are a little on the limited side, but they do have the common firearms. They do require at least two persons to rent a firearm, unless you come in with your own pistol, so if you are shopping for your first pistol I suggest come with a second person with experience, or sign up for one of the basic classes the range offers.

Due to the length the range is not a range that allows center fire rifles. They do allow 12 gauge shotguns, but they limit the time on weekends (after 5 pm) and shotgun ammo must be purchased from the range. The lanes could use the distance lines repainted and the target retrieval system is dated compared to other local ranges, but you can still make out the approximate distance of your target. It would be nice if the shooting window had a larger shelf to place your pistols and magazines on. The counter staff are also the Range Safety Officers and it would be nice to see them walk the lanes a little more often as I have seen some groups of shooters ( I assume new to shooting) a bit relaxed on the basic safety rules. I have seen them walk away from the shooting window pistol in hand flagging the whole line of lanes. This isn’t a normal every trip event but I have seen it twice and I have seen people rent a pistol definitely outside of their skill level. You engage those people with a little conversation and they do try a little better, but then you become THAT guy at the range. Of course better be on the side of safety and everyone enjoy their trip to the range than be on the news for accidental shooting.

The membership rate is still a decent price compared to the other ranges and again the employees at the range have, in my experiences, been awesome and helpful. The range is open 7 days a week Monday- Friday 12 pm to 10 pm and the weekends are 10 am to 10 pm. a handful of places to eat afterwards and talk about your range trips with friends. Parking is decent in their lot, but you do have street parking as an option as well. All in all I would say this is a range I enjoy going to and will return to, but there are nicer ranges with some options you can’t get at Firing Line. I recommend checking them out if you are in Huntington Beach and want to shoot pistols. You can get more information at https://www.firingline.net/
